Shanghai ranked world’s smartest city in 2023

Shanghai claimed the top spot due to several factors, including its Suishenban Citizen Cloud

According to a recent study conducted by Juniper Research, Shanghai has been ranked as the leading smart city for the second consecutive year in 2023. Juniper Research, renowned experts in the sustainability and IoT market, evaluated 50 world cities based on various smart city aspects including transportation and infrastructure, energy and lighting, city management and technology, and urban connectivity.

The top five smart cities in the ranking are as follows:

  • Shanghai
  • New York
  • Toronto
  • Seoul
  • Shenzhen

Shanghai claimed the top spot due to several factors, including its Suishenban Citizen Cloud, which offers access to over 1,000 different services for city residents. The city also demonstrated strong deployment of 5G technology and showcased innovative approaches such as digital twins. The leading cities in the ranking have successfully harnessed data and connectivity to enhance citizen experiences.

Nick Maynard, co-author of the research, highlighted Shanghai’s joined-up approach to data as a key factor contributing to its success. The city has built a comprehensive data platform and established the necessary connectivity to support its smart city initiatives. Maynard emphasized that this integrated approach is a crucial lesson for other cities aspiring to emulate Shanghai’s achievements and should be an essential component of any smart city initiative.

The study also revealed that cost savings are a significant driver behind smart city deployments. The forecasted global cost savings from smart city initiatives are expected to reach $US249 billion by 2028, representing a remarkable growth of 158 per cent from $US96 billion in 2023. These savings stem from reduced energy usage and emissions resulting from the implementation of smart grid systems, smart traffic management, and smart street lighting. The substantial cost savings are projected to surpass the expenditure on smart city software and hardware by almost threefold in 2028, highlighting the potential return on investment for cities.
