CIO perspective: China SD-WAN security market research

The network, as an infrastructure connecting the cloud to the edge, plays an important role in digital transformation.

Analyst firm IDC noted that SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network) has become a new trend in the network field in the past two years. China’s SD-WAN application began in 2017. After rapid development in 2018 and 2019, the growth rate in 2020 will be 51.4 per cent.

The market size reaches 100 million U.S. dollars. The customer base covers multiple industries such as finance, retail, manufacturing, Internet, media, government, healthcare, energy, electricity, education, transportation and services.

However, the management of the SD-WAN network involves a large number of access branch points, and the deployment and management are complicated, which obviously increases the difficulty of security protection. As shown in the figure below, IDC survey shows that security has become the first choice for enterprises to build SD-WAN networks.

IDC believes that SDSA (Software Defined Security Access) is a new access security and control solution, and is the key to building a secure SD-WAN.

SDSA defined by IDC includes: Software Defined Perimeter (SDP), Identity Aware Proxy (IAP), and Internet Overlay.

SDSA can inject threat detection and defence capabilities into the SD-WAN remote access process or architecture. SDSA establishes a secure connection based on context-aware, identity-aware, and device-aware strategies for authenticated users and authorized applications. The SDSA solution abandons static network boundaries and is more suitable for digitally transformed organizations.

SDSA is built on the principle of application- and user-centric distributed integrity and least-privileged access to prevent unauthorised users from connecting or sending any network traffic to unauthorised applications.
