The University of Sydney chooses Azul platform core

The university sought out a java runtime solution that would offer cost savings

Azul, a company specializing in Java, has been selected as the sole Java provider for The University of Sydney. The university, known for its prestigious reputation and large IT infrastructure, sought a Java runtime solution that would offer cost savings, predictability, and ease of doing business compared to its previous provider, Oracle.

With thousands of desktops running Java-based applications and frameworks, the university’s Information and Communications Technology Vendor Management Office recognized the need for a secure and supported Java runtime without the risk of time-consuming audits. Azul emerged as a trusted partner, offering a secure, drop-in replacement for Oracle Java, and addressing the university’s requirements.

According to Emiliano Fisanotti, Vendor Management Specialist at The University of Sydney, Azul provides an efficient IT vendor relationship that eliminates uncertainty and distractions. The university values the ease of working with Azul and the peace of mind in terms of price increases and audits.

Scott Sellers, CEO, and co-founder of Azul, highlighted the importance of the Australian market for the company and its expansion plans in the Asia Pacific region. Azul aims to cater to higher education institutions by offering budget-friendly solutions, easy deployment, and strong security and support.

The announcement comes at a time of significant changes in Oracle Java pricing and a growing adoption of OpenJDK-based Java runtimes. Azul, as the second largest Java vendor after Oracle, supports a wide range of Java versions and provides a secure and compliant Java runtime at a significantly lower cost compared to Oracle. The shift in the market has led to decreased usage of Oracle Java and an increased demand for alternative solutions like Azul.
