Malaysia revokes 5G spectrum to a number telcos

Speculations it has been awarded to a small telco with billionaire ties.

Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia has announced it has revoked18 instruments including Instructions and Determinants are applicable use of frequency bands of 700MHz, 900MHz, and 2600MHz frequency bands.

“This spectrum is based on the provisions of the Communications Act and Multimedia 1998 and Communications and Multimedia (Spectrum) Regulations 2000,” he stated.

Accordingly, 18 instruments including Instructions and Determinants are applicable use of frequency bands of 700MHz, 900MHz, and 2600MHz frequency bands presented to me.

On the basis of technical, legal and legal issues in need of a transparent process, I have directed the Chairman of MCMC to revoke these Instructions and Directions and to review them the instruments at a rapid rate.”

According to the Minister, “the Government through the MoH is committed to developing the country as well provide the best services in technology and telecommunications,

It has been reported the Malaysian Government has awarded its 5G telecommunications Altel, “a firm controlled by the reclusive but politically connected tycoon Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary, seemingly without an open tender previously promised”.

Earlier this year, then Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said it was on track to “commercially launch 5G technology in the third quarter of 2020 and hopes the technology will serve as the infrastructure for economic growth”.
