Information regarding Optus breach

A dedicated forum has been created for concerned customers

The Department of Transport and VicRoads are closely monitoring the Optus data breach.

We take the privacy of our customers very seriously and understand any incident involving the unauthorised disclosure of personal information can be stressful.

What we know

Optus is progressively confirming with impacted customers whether their Victorian licence details have been involved in the data breach.

What we are doing

A dedicated form has been created for concerned customers to request to have their Victorian driver licence record flagged and protected on the Victorian and national licence databases and the Australian Government’s document verification service.

By flagging records VicRoads will prevent any unauthorised changes or access to individual information through the Victorian licence database. Records will also be flagged within the national database.

We urge you to use the web form to register your details. You will not have to wait on hold and the form is quick and easy to fill out.

The Department of Transport and VicRoads are also committed to supporting impacted individuals who wish to have their licence replaced. This request will be validated against the Optus information once available.

Further information on licence replacements is expected shortly. In the interim, please do not use the usual replacement licence services.

What does ‘proactively flagging’ my licence do?

Flagging records helps us identify impacted customers and enables us to work with them and Optus, in this instance, to support any further investigations required.

By flagging records, we will be able to prevent any unauthorised changes or accesses to individual information through the Victorian driver licence database. Records will also be flagged within the national database.

It will not, however, prevent people using licence information in third party usages such as applying for bank accounts or any other circumstance which requires a driver’s licences as a form of ID.

How do I know if my licence has been caught up?

Optus is progressively contacting impacted customers directly to notify them that their personal information has been disclosed. Not all Optus’ customers have been impacted by the breach.

We are working very closely with Optus’s supporting partner IDCARE to get the full list of Victorian driver licences that have been exposed by the breach.
